The importance of a good Sunday service cannot be undervalued. Sundays are the best day of the week. Hardly will a Sunday pass without me trying to make that point. I say it because I mean it. Sundays are the best of the week. But maybe it would be profitable to say why that is the case.
- Sundays are the day — God chose for His people to come together and worship Him. The Creator-God wants His people to worship Him, and Sundays are when it happens. Of course, we are to worship Him every other day too, but Sundays are special! Sundays are the appointed day upon which we come together to accomplish a communal worship.
- Sundays are the day — we get to come together to praise God for what He’s done for us. That is humbling! The fact that God would allow (and accept) our puny attempts to honor Him is thought-provoking indeed! Yet, that is exactly what He does. It would do us well to consider every time a Bible hero was in the presence of God they were immediately aware of their unworthiness (see Isaiah in Isa. 6; Ezekiel in Eze. 1; Daniel in Dan. 7; John in Rev. 4-5). God lets us come into His presence and praise Him—what a thought!
- Sundays are the day — we get to remind each other of the previously stated points. We get to join in praise of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Brother and Sisters, fellow soldiers of the cross, laborers in the vineyard, workers striving for faithfulness, servants of God Most High—all working to keep the focus “skyward/heavenward” (as a dear shepherd has said in his public prayers). Man, what a sobering responsibility! Worship is our town-hall meeting: where we remind one another of our loyalties to the King. Worship is a battalion coming in off the battlefield for refreshments and restrengthening. Worship is the family coming together for a foretaste of the great family reunion to come. Worship is a chance to turn our gaze towards the throne of God and shout out in fidelity, full surrendering allegiance, undying devotion, deep love and loyalty to the God who saves!
Worship is what makes Sundays… well, Sundays. Sundays are the best of day of the week. It isn’t because we are off work, it isn’t because there is good food, it isn’t because there is football (ugh!), it isn’t because the whole world seems to slow down that one day every week. Sundays are the best day of the week because we get the opportunity to come together to tell God what He means to us. It is the chance to join our voices and hearts in songs and prayers. We speak to the God who hears, we speak to one another to stir our hearts to be better tomorrow. We join in the study of God’s word, the very word which tells us how to live and move and conduct ourselves to be all we should be in His glorious sight.
We sing about that Gloryland Way. How I want to see Him, look upon His face, there to sing forever of His saving grace. The habitation built by the living God. When we all get to heaven, when all God’s singers get home. Beautiful isle of somewhere! I can’t wait, and Sundays remind me of that.
We read about how Yahweh is great and greatly to be praised. God who sees. God who saves. God who dwells with His people. God who cares. God who hears. God who acts for His people. God who helps and redeems, and God who is concerned about ME. Though I was once spiritually dead in my trespasses and sins, God sent His Son to save me, even me. Sundays remind me of that.
Every element of worship is designed to help us remember these eternal truths, and many others we don’t have the room to speak of here.
Sundays are the best day of the week! But, it begs the questions: (1) What do you do with your Sundays? (2) Do you see Sundays for what they are?
