Occasionally someone will ask me about books to read. Even recently, I was asked for some recommended reading material by some of my fellow preachers. Boy, do I love this topic! I tried to read a book a week in 2022… I didn’t make it.
Perhaps, I should make the point, READ YOUR BIBLE. I love reading other material, but it doesn’t replace my Bible reading. To quote Charles Spurgeon: “Visit many good books, but live in the Bible.”
Some recommended reads:
Mind Your King: Lessons and Essays on Biblical Authority by Doy Moyer — I appreciate brother Doy’s mind and the way he communicates this information. One thing I see more and more of, even among Bible believers, is a lack of appreciation for Bible authority. This book is exceptional. While my list is almost always changing, this is at the top right now. (Get it from CEI bookstore.)
Leaving A Mark: The Lectures of Phil Roberts, Ed. by Nathan Ward — This is a series of lectures that brother Phil Roberts gave. While it may be a tad on the academic side, it will challenge you to read deeper in your studies. This may be more suited for those of us who regularly preach, but it is a big-time favorite of mine.
Mere Christianity by CS Lewis — I would disagree with several points that Lewis makes throughout this book. So, this is not an endorsement of all that he says. But, he was a brilliant man, and much of what he argues is simple and logical. (Get it from CEI bookstore.)
Invitation to a Spiritual Revolution by Paul Earnhart — Brother Paul Earnhart had a masterful way of communicating the high thoughts of Scripture in a way that could help anyone. (Get it from CEI bookstore.)
The Man of Galilee by Atticus Haygood — This is an interesting book, written over a hundred years ago. It makes some powerful points about the person of Jesus of Nazareth. Shorter read, but well worth the time and investment!
The Simple Pattern: A Straight-Forward Explanation of Institutionalism & Related Issues, Ed. by Jim Deason — A compilation of essays on the pattern for the NT church. (Get it from CEI bookstore.)
That’s all for now.
