The Danger of Daily Bible Reading

There is a great, severe, and terrible danger to reading the Bible regularly. There is no question that this is the case. There is no doubt that such is the reality of the effort and time spent therein. This danger is a special kind, unlike any other in the world.

Regularly reading the Bible is a danger to selfishness and sin. It is entirely possible that the more you read your Bible the more you will deny yourself and selfish tendencies. It is quite likely that the more you read your Bible the more you will kill the sin in your life. The more you read your Bible the more you will see King Jesus and His death on the cross. This is not a magic formula that once you plug in, the sin mystically escapes from your life. No. It is a sobering awareness that reading your Bible causes. You become suddenly more aware of your sinfulness, your guilt before God and His absolute holiness. The more holy you realize God is, and the more unholy you see yourself, the more desperate you will become to cling unto Jesus Christ the Lord.

Regular Bible reading is a danger to sin and selfishness.

Is that a bad thing? Not at all. It is an incredibly good thing. It could be the goodest (goodest is the redneck superlative of good) thing you ever do. The better you read your Bible, the better you see King Jesus. The better you see King Jesus, the better you rid your life of sin. The better you rid your life of sin, the better you serve God. The better you serve God, the more you look forward to heaven.

What’s the point? Read your Bible more; read it every day. Read it because it will draw you closer to the feet of our risen Lord, our benevolent King Jesus. Being drawn closer to His feet will only bring you good in this life, and life enteral when this one ends.

Since we are halfway through the year, I figured now was a good time to mention daily Bible reading again. See a previous post for some recommended daily Bible reading plans (here).
