“No One Wants the Gospel Anymore…”

“That same problem of sin existed in ancient Israel, in the first century, and in the modern era is what makes our world ripe for the gospel of Jesus Christ. As then, people are looking for answers now. They desire something more than what this world gives, something to provide solutions to the greater problem of sin. We sometimes complain that people today are not interested anymore. The world just doesn’t seem to care. This didn’t stop Christians in the first century. Why should it stop us from trying now? As long as God lets us live here, there will be opportunities and responsibility. The world is in need of answers, and we have those answers in the Scriptures”

— Doy Moyer, Mind Your Faith: Essays in Apologetics, 2nd ed, rev. & exp. (Temple Terrace, FL: Florida College Press, 2010, 2018), 165.

I tire of this defeatist mentality. With hands in our pockets, feet gingerly prodding rocks around on the ground, while looking down, we utter these fateful words: “No one wants the gospel anymore…” (And in the voice of Eeyore from Winnie the Pooh.) Sometimes, that’s how we feel about sharing the gospel.

I can’t say this any more plainly. It is dead wrong.

There are plenty of people in this world who still want the gospel! I preach to a full auditorium every Sunday whose very presence suggests that there are people out there who are still interested!

True, there may not be thousands at every service. There are, however, interested hearts.

This is more like our spiritual forefathers than we think (reread Doy’s quote above…)

Were they lining up in Isaiah’s day to hear the message of God? Uhm… not exactly. But he wasn’t alone either!

Were they lining up in Paul’s day to hear the message of God? Uhm… not exactly. But many were.

How did the faith pass through the generations to us? Because, every generation fought through adversity and challenging times, to share the gospel with their world, and through the annals of history, it was passed to us.

It is our time now. We must hold out the banner of truth, hoist high the saving message of salvation, and pass it valiantly onward to the next generation coming behind us.

Do not believe the defeated cry, “No one wants to hear the gospel anymore…” There are plenty. Let’s get to work sharing the gospel with them.
