For What Are You Thankful?

November is special. Not only is the temperature starting to let up and the holidays approaching, but the month is more or less dedicated to being thankful. What a uniquely Christian idea! Of all people, we should be the most thankful. We know Whom we should thank and, even better, why we should thank Him. We sometimes sing the song “Count Your Many Blessings.” When was the last time you did it?

Thanks be to God…

For life, breath, and all things…

For the breathtaking beauty of His creation…

For the remedy to sin through His Son and our Savior Jesus Christ…

For the Kingship of Jesus Christ, our benevolent King…

For the hope of heaven, an eternal dwelling in His presence…

For the forgiveness of sins that allows such hope…

For the revelation of Scripture that provides assurance…

For the promises of God revealed, preserved, and guaranteed to the faithful…

For the family of the faith, which He graciously designed to help us stay the course…

For worship…

For singing to stir the heart and emotions…

For our temporal blessings: jobs, homes, food, clothes, friends, laughter, love…

For pain, discomfort, heartache, and heartache that makes us long for home…

For His steadfast love, His gracious disposition that prods us onward…

There are many more that could be added to this list. Several could be expanded, several could be elaborated on, and several are worthy of an entire study alone. How amazing is our God?!

Psalm 100: A Psalm for Thanksgiving.

“Shout joyfully to the Lord, all the earth. Serve the Lord with jubilation; Come before Him with rejoicing. Know that the Lord Himself is God; It is He who has made us, and not we ourselves; We are His people and the sheep of His pasture. Enter His gates with thanksgiving, And His courtyards with praise. Give thanks to Him, bless His name. For the Lord is good; His mercy is everlasting And His faithfulness is to all generations.”

— Yahweh is great and greatly to be praised —
