Brethren, We Cannot Compromise

This is one of the greatest threats we face today. Compromise. Christianity is not for the compromiser. Don’t misunderstand. We are not advocating a terrorizing bulldog mentally that steamrolls anyone with a contrary view. We should compromise with one another in every area we can (Rom. 14). However, we should not compromise the gospel (Gal. 1:6-9).

Christ brings division (Luke 12:51-53; cf. Matt. 10:24-39; Luke 14:26-27). This is a side of Christianity that we would rather avoid. Yet, it is no less a part of the gospel. Brethren, we cannot compromise.

One thing Jesus makes clear is that Christians will not agree with everyone around them and vice versa (Jas. 4:4; Luke 12:51-53; Matt. 10:24-39; cf. also the numerous examples in Acts). This happy-go-lucky cheap gospel Christianity that promotes universal inclusion without repentance or respect for the NT pattern is not the gospel of our King.

The gospel divides. Brethren, we cannot compromise.

Where does that leave us? We must expect division. This means we cannot compromise on the truth. It is far too easy to make little concessions, minor tweaks, or modifications so that after a round of mental gymnastics, we can harmonize this behavior with the message of Christ. Far too often, this happens when it hits the home. Brethren, we cannot compromise.

We are strong on marriage, divorce, and remarriage and say that divorce is only Scripturally authorized in the case of sexual immorality until it’s our daughter or son wanting out of a marriage. Suddenly, we believe there are reasons other than sexual immorality. Brethren, we cannot compromise.

We are strong on dancing, modesty, or the like until our daughter or son wants to wear it, go to the prom, or do cheerleading. Suddenly, we believe it isn’t a big deal; those strong views against such are “old-fashioned and haven’t caught up with the world.” Brethren, we cannot compromise.

We are strong on denominationalism and institutionalism, that the church has specific work and worship, limited by the NT Scriptures and governed by the King’s decrees, until someone we love leaves the simple NT pattern. Suddenly, we believe those “patternist” are a “bunch of stuffy old legalists,” so bring on the fellowship halls, the kitchens, the recreational and social activities funded for and provided by the church; bring on the praise teams, praise bands, and whatever else. Brethren, we cannot compromise.

We are strong on any number of issues until we have someone we love diving headlong into it, and if we aren’t careful, we will justify, excuse, and permit anything and everything. If we are not resolved to stick to the truth no matter what, we will compromise everything and every point until there is no gospel left. Brethren, we cannot compromise.
